Mike Yates of Citrus Springs named 2017 AMVET of the Year!

Florida AMVETS (American Veterans) Cmdr. Terry Corson and Florida AMVETS Executive Director Fertie Brand recently presented Mike Yates of Citrus Springs with the 2017 AMVET of the Year award.

Cmdr. Corson indicated Mike has been a leader in many ways, taking furniture to the homeless veterans housing project in Ocala and helping to prepare those houses for occupancy by other veterans.

As district commander, he has visited all nine posts in his district at least three times providing guidance to post officers. He also has attended the Florida AMVETS conventions and training programs.

Harry M. Bailey Post Cmdr. Floyd Blodgett, who nominated Mike Yates for the award, stated Mike is very active in post meetings, a steady worker during the post’s weekly taco Thursdays, participates in numerous patriotic observances, works at the post’s Friday night dinners, recruits new members and supports other post officers.

Mike Yates is a member of the Florida Department’s Homeless veterans task force, 2017 District 9 commander and 2017 second vice commander of the Harry M. Bailey AMVETS post in Citrus Springs. He is also an active president of the VFW 4864 auxiliary.

AMVETS is a nationwide organization chartered by Congress and signed into public law by former President Harry Truman in 1947. Membership is open to any member of the military and all veterans with an honorable discharge. The Florida AMVETS department is the second largest state department in the veteran’s organization.
